The Heat Is ON!

As we get closer to the due date for my media product, time management is becoming more and more important for completing my magazine before the deadline. To help with this, I made a production timeline for February and March. Here it is!

Magazine Example - GQ

GQ, originally Gentlemen's Quarterly, is a highly influential men's magazine known for its coverage of fashion, style, culture, and lifestyle. Founded in 1931 as Apparel Arts, GQ has evolved over the decades to become a premier publication catering to the modern man's interests and tastes. Specifically, GQ's publication on men's fashion showcases the latest designer collections, street style trends, and expert styling tips.

House Style

In this example of GQ Magazine, one of the first things that stands out is the model. In this magazine, model ASAP Rocky is placed directly in the center, drawing the viewer's attention directly towards a popular and distinct celebrity. This is supported by the fact that all the text on the magazine is placed around the model, keeping them unobstructed. Additionally, this magazine has a similar use of color in its text. The important information, such as the magazine title and model name, is in gold while the rest is in black. This draws the audience's attention while still providing additional information.

Magazine Example - Esquire

Esquire is an established American men's magazine that covers a wide range of topics. These include fashion, culture, lifestyle, politics, and more. While Esquire itself is known for its wide coverage of men's interests, Esquire Fashion Magazine specifically focuses on the latest trends, styles, and insights within men's fashion.

House style

In this example, one of the main things that pops out at you is the bold red "Esquire" masthead. This color choice allows the important information on the cover to stand out, also being seen in the word "dangerous" describing Pedro Pascal. Another notable aspect of the house style is the dark color scheme, making the model seem more manly. This is supported by the striking pose of the model. Finally, the difference in color seen in the text is also a feature that stands out. It helps draw the audience's attention and creates a contrast between the important information and the additional information. This is something that I want to take advantage of in my own magazine.

Magazine Example - Vogue Hommes

Vogue Hommes is a part of Vogue Men's Fashion Magazines which debuted in 2005 and has served as a model for men's fashion since. These magazines contain popular celebrities and models wearing the latest in men's fashion, showing off different styles, and shaping the modern fashion sense.

House Style

The house style of the example above centers on the model, showing off the style that he's wearing and putting the focus on him. This is done to attract the attention of the magazine's target audience, being men interested in fashion. The words on the cover shift around the model, providing important information and context without drawing focus away from the model.

Another notable thing about the house style in this example is the masthead. The stylized and bold font makes the title stand out without taking away too much focus. Additionally, the incorporation of the phrase "Hommes International" is woven into the Vogue masthead, displaying a stylized approach to a masthead.

Finally, the cool color palate is light, providing an elegant contrast between the background and the important features of the cover.

This magazine will provide a good example and inspiration for our future magazine.

House style analysis

Now that I've chosen the genre that I want to focus on for my magazine product, I want to do a deeper analysis of popular magazines under this genre. This is because having a deeper understanding of magazine production specifically for men's fashion magazines will better help me make my final media product.

For this deep analysis, I decided to key in on the giants in the field of men's fashion. For me, these are Vogue Hommes, Esquire, and GQ.

My Target Audience

Welcome back to my Media Studies blogs! Last time, I showed you all the responses to the target market survey that I made. After reviewing the survey responses, I now know what my target market is, as well as a general idea of what my final magazine will look like.

Age:

All the people who took my survey were between the ages of 16 and 19. This means that my magazine will likely target teens and young adults.

Gender:

Most of the people who submitted responses to the survey identified as male. This suggests that maybe focusing the magazine on men's fashion might be beneficial. However, I want to still leave room in the magazine for things that might attract individuals that identified as female in their responses so as to not alienate potential groups in my audience.

Interests:

The people who took the survey all had a particular interest in fashion and style, putting a high importance on this aspect of their lives. I'll strive to target this in my magazine, further attracting the audience of fashion-savvy teens and young adults.

survey responses

Welcome back to my blog! Last time, I showed you all the target market survey that I created in preparation for making my final magazine. After waiting a while, I'm excited to see the responses to the questions so that I have a better understanding of who my target market is and what they're looking for in a magazine. Let's get right into it!

Forms response chart. Question title: What is your age. Number of responses: 10 responses.
This shows that my target market is made up of teens between the ages of 16 and 19. Because of this, I'll consider making my men's fashion magazine centered around teens instead.

Forms response chart. Question title: What is your gender?. Number of responses: 10 responses.
The survey shows that the majority of people interested in my magazine are male, solidifying the fact that my magazine will be centered around men.

Forms response chart. Question title: How important is fashion to you?. Number of responses: 10 responses.
Most of the people who took the survey said that fashion is extremely important to them. This helps me know that men's fashion magazines are in demand.

Forms response chart. Question title: How often do you read magazines?. Number of responses: 10 responses.
The most common answer for this question was a 2 (not very often). This means that my magazine will have to be especially eye-catching to draw people in regardless.

Forms response chart. Question title: How likely are you to purchase a fashion magazine?. Number of responses: 10 responses.
This reinforces people's desire to buy a men's fashion magazine.

Forms response chart. Question title: In your opinion, what is an acceptable price for a magazine?. Number of responses: 10 responses.
Having an understanding of the acceptable price range is useful for knowing the type of magazine that people are after.

Forms response chart. Question title: What key details are most important to you when buying a fashion magazine?. Number of responses: 10 responses.
This question is particularly important because it helps me decide what to focus on most in my magazine. Eye-catching photos, Bold titles, and Relevant articles seem to be the most important things for my target market, meaning I should focus more on these aspects.

Forms response chart. Question title: which of these fashion magazine examples appeal to you the most?. Number of responses: 10 responses.
The house style of the Vogue Hommes example appealed the most to my target market. Replicating some of the aspects from this magazine might make mine more appealing.

Forms response chart. Question title: Which of these titles is the best for a men's fashion magazine?. Number of responses: 10 responses.
Audax, the Latin word for bold, caught my eye the most. After reviewing the survey, most people agree that the simplicity and class of Audax sounded the best for a men's fashion magazine.

Forms response chart. Question title: what color scheme should the magazine follow?. Number of responses: 10 responses.
Personally, I was leaning more towards bold colors for the magazine. After seeing these responses, I now have the 2 options of bold colors or cool colors. I'll experiment with these in the future to find which one works best.
